I’m prone to getting annoyed when people say, “All religions are basically the same.” They aren’t. People who make statements like that either haven’t found out for themselves what the different religions actually teach, or they’re just glib enough to not care.
“Truth is relative,” they say. “What matters is how you live your life.”
How can it matter how you live your life if truth is relative? And don’t get me wrong. I’m not the sort of person who has no concept of differing perspectives, or is intolerant of grey areas. I’m all for grappling with inconsistencies, being flexible with complicated ideas, staying open-minded if I don’t have all the answers, and being patient with the frailties of human nature. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to throw out or destabilise the notion of truth.
